So the tourny has ended and I’ve made it back to Sydney w/o any trouble. As you can probably tell from the title, we ended up third at nationals. So we’ll go down in the history books as the third best university ultimate team for 2004. To be honest, we were probably could have done better but since we had a bad draw (we had to face the top 3 seeded teams on the same day) we ended up 4th in the round robin based on a 3 way tie for second that was decided on points. So having to play the eventual champs in the semis was not the ideal result, oh well. The consolation finals and finals were both rematches of the state championships, except this time both results were reversed. In a way it was good for us b/c it allowed us to get revenge on ANU, who beat us at the state championships. You could tell that they were slightly bitter at us b/c we play a very male dominated game, but that was b/c that’s were our advantage was, so why not exploit it. Overall, we can’t be disappointed b/c we achieved our goal of medalling, which is pretty good for a “rebuilding year”. But frisbee wasn’t the only thing that happened while we were in Perth for national. As I’ve stated before, Uni Games is a large party. So once we were done, we let our hair down, so to speak. We had an extra day at the end, so we did a day trip to the Pinnacles up the coast. They’re these rocks that randomly stick out of the sand and range from a couple inches tall to a a couple metres tall. I swear it felt like were were in a different world. A few members of the team even played disc golf there, after which we caught the sunset, it was really a magical experience. Ok, maybe magical is the wrong word, but there was something about it that you can’t really put your finger on that made it surreal.
On a random note, I love car convoys! We had three rented cars and managed to have some fun. We propped up windshield wipers, stole car keys at intersections, threw gummies/water through open windows while moving, etc. I think that it’s fair to say that fun was had by all and we were dissappointed that we had to come back.
